Detox Craze: Stupid or Sane?

We can't turn on the TV or the radio without hearing about the latest detox craze. Just the other day, we heard Rod Ryan talk about how great the Blessed Herbs one-week cleanse was on his radio show. Trust us, we really don't need to hear about his cleanse in detail that early in the morning. Thank goodness we weren't eating breakfast.

Even celebs have jumped on the detox bandwagon. Megan Fox takes shots of apple cider vinegar, while Beyoncé lost weight for Dreamgirls on the lemonade diet. But is eating only strange herbs or a lemon, cayenne mixture really that healthy?

If lemon, cayenne and maple syrup doesn't whet your appetite, you can try Traditional Medicinals Everyday Detox Tea, kombucha, or fruit juices. All of these programs say they will detox and cleanse your body of all the bad toxins we get from our environment and the food we eat. Hardcore detox advocates prefer consuming only water for a few days to cleanse the body of toxins. Sounds like a terrible hunger headache waiting to happen.

Do these obscure remedies really work?

Unfortunately, we have yet to find an answer to this question. Many doctors say that the human body does a good job naturally getting rid of the toxins in the body, and that these detox programs are dangerous. They could lead to blood sugar problems, vitamin deficiencies, or, well, just too much time in the bathroom. Basically, detox programs are not a magic pill.

But cleansing regimens have been around for centuries. Some people believe detox programs are a great way to purify the body. They feel lighter, happier and healthier. Some even lose those pesky five pounds. Fox swears that apple cider vinegar shots not only cleanse her body, but keep the weight off instead of diet and exercise. Rod Ryan's guest on his radio show does the 21 day Blessed Herbs cleanse twice a year. It's almost like spring cleaning for your body.

We did decide to try the detox tea and kombucha, but we couldn't bring ourselves to give up food. Call us weak, but water and fruit juice just doesn't get us through the day. The tea was pretty good if you like a strong licorice flavor, and we are already fans of the Kombucha Kleanse. Both drinks did make us feel like we were doing something healthy, but as far as feeling detoxed, we're not so sure.

For now, we'll probably just stick with our old-school fruits, vegetables and lean proteins when we need to detox. We don't know about you, but we aren't ready to give up solid foods -- even if it just for a day or two.
