When you walk in the front door of Bakery Donut at 1203 11th St. in the Heights, you are overwhelmed with all the choices. There are lots of kolaches, twisters, filled bars and all sorts of breakfast food. The bacon sandwich on a whole wheat English muffin looks awesome. And the donut case itself is a riot of color. I figured I had found one of those stellar little mom-and-pop doughnut shops that put the chains to shame.
Unfortunately, the reality did not live up to my expectations. The texture of the raised doughnut I sampled was shockingly stiff. In fact, the donut didn't seem to compress at all when I bit it. It retained its original shape as if it were made of Styrofoam. The chocolate cake donut was even drier than the raised doughnut. Granted, I bought them closer to lunchtime than breakfast time, but still.
If I should have ordered something else, let me know and I'll go back.
