We are in search of Houston's best sandwiches because we love sandwiches and we love Houston!
Lobster rolls are awesome. Grilled cheese sandwiches are awesome. We've written about versions of both in this space. But, this is the first time we've seen them combined and we love the results.
The Lobster Grilled Cheese at Dallas-based chain East Hampton Sandwich Company (907 Westheimer #300) is surprising in that it leans more on spice than we expected. Most lobster sandwiches choose to feature the lobster, letting the sweet, tender meat stand on its own. This, on the other hand, is a bit more like eating a lobster mac and cheese. The lobster is the accent rather than the featured attraction.
Honestly, that is fine in this instance because it's really the combination that makes it great. This sandwich has less lobster (about a quarter pound) than the traditional lobster roll, but it is not lacking at all in the cheese department. Layered with shaved havarti and sliced American cheeses, it feels and eats like a grilled cheese. That is to say, it's melty comfort food.

The twist here is the "sriracha dijionaise." They don't skimp on spice here. The sandwich definitely has a bite and it is that sharpness that helps to cut through its richness.
Like anything that involves lobster, it's not cheap ($18.95). In fact, East Hampton (as its name implies) is definitely an upscale joint. No wonder of the two locations in Houston, one of them (the one we visited) is in the swanky River Oaks District shopping area. But, the ingredients here boast outstanding quality and the flavors are on point.
From a cost and general "oh, God, we need to workout for a week to get over eating this" standpoint, we might not hit up East Hampton for a Lobster Grilled Cheese every week, but it sure makes for a hell of treat when you are feeling in the mood.
If you have a sandwich you think is one of the best in town, hit us up. We're always looking for new options.
