Eat Healthy While Traveling: Five Homemade Snacks for the Plane

Despite what your stomach tells you at the airport, that last-minute chicken and biscuit basket is not the perfect snack for your flight. Fight the holiday travel bulge with healthy snacks that are easy to make, easy to transport and even easier to eat.

From date- and nut-stuffed bites to crisp and crunchy baked chips, check out these Five Healthy Treats Perfect for Holiday Travel:

No-Bake Energy Bites

These protein-packed treats are like healthy munchkins. But instead of feeling like a glutton, you'll be refreshed and energized after popping a few of these babies.

Try this peanut butter version, made with honey, flax seeds, oatmeal and chocolate chips; these coco cacao chia bites, filled with chia seeds, dates and walnuts; or these lemon-kissed blondies, made with vanilla bean, lemon zest, rolled oats and cashews.

Baked Kale Chips

Skip the Ruffles in lieu of something a bit greener. Baked kale chips dusted with sea salt and pepper are light, crunchy and guilt-free.

Just tear kale leaves into 2-inch pieces, toss with a tablespoon of olive oil, spread the leaves in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 300 degrees until dark and crisp (about 30 minutes).

Finish the chips with a sprinkle of sea salt or add extra flavor with combinations like chile and lime, lemon zest and Parmesan, or soy sauce and ginger.

Roasted Chickpeas

Satisfy your craving for something salty and crunchy with easy-to-make roasted chickpeas. They're delicious simply dusted with paprika, salt and pepper, but we love the hint of spice from this sriracha- and curry-spiked version.

And if you've got a bit of a sweet tooth, these cinnamon-sugar chick peas are sure to please.

Cranberry Pistachio and Dark Chocolate Bark

Put that Snickers Bar away. Not only is this sweet treat indulgent, it's good for you, too. Get tons of antioxidants from pistachios, cranberries and dark chocolate, along with plenty of fiber and some good ol' vitamin C.

Turkey Jerky

Skip your usual sugar-loaded, teriyaki-glazed beef jerky and get your fill of protein with this recipe for homemade turkey jerky instead. Season it with salt and pepper or spice it up with a pinch of paprika, cumin, chile or turmeric.

Bonus tip: To get thin and even slices, put the turkey breast in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes before cutting it into long, thin strips.
