The results of a recent cholesterol check had me driving straight past the drive-thru and searching for fast food that wouldn't stop my heart. Enter My Fit Foods. It wasn't just my sky-high lipid levels; I also needed to reboot my New Year's "clean eating" resolution. In addition to their store locations, My Fit Foods has kiosks located in many grocery stores, including the H-E-B Montrose, H-E-B Vintage Park, and Williams Tower on Post Oak here in Houston.
I used to think My Fit Foods was just a healthy fast-food alternative, but this is actually an entire fitness/lifestyle program. The concept is in the vein of programs like Jenny Craig, where all of your food is provided, along with options for full-service consultations. My Fit Foods also offers a "21 Day Challenge" program designed for weight loss, or you can just order food a la carte, which I did, choosing one breakfast and one lunch option.
Luis' Fit Megas (Medium): Ground turkey, red potatoes, egg yolks, egg whites, corn tortillas, red salsa, yellow bell peppers, onions, red bell peppers, spices; 360 calories, 9 g fat, 36 g carbs, 32 g protein.
I love migas! I was excited to see this in the breakfast selections and snatched it up immediately. As you can see from the photo, I did add a dollop of Daisy -- I'm a sucker for alliteration in advertising -- so my breakfast was closer to the 400-calorie range. The package instructions are to microwave the dish for 2-2.5 minutes, but it doesn't specify whether to keep the lid on or off; I loosened the lid but left it resting on top of the dish. The tortillas were pretty tough and chewy, and the egg was a little dry. Overall, I liked the flavor of the spices but I thought that texture-wise, these left something to be desired. I want to get this again and try warming it uncovered before I throw down a definitive "skip this."
Brian's Fit Chicken Enchilada (Medium): Chicken breast, nonfat yogurt, corn tortillas, black beans, tomatillos, tomatoes, red bell peppers, yellow bell peppers, onions, jalapenos, cilantro, lime juice, cheese, macadamia nut oil, spices; 440 calories, 4.5 g fat, 66 g carbs, 33 g protein.
This time, I heated the dish uncovered in the microwave, and I thought the results were better. The tortillas were soft and chewy, not tough and rubbery like they were in the migas -- not a one-to-one comparison, I know. I also added a bit of our own salsa. (My FAVORITE, Texas-Texas Perfect Hot, which is indeed perfectly hot.) The salsa, combined with the heat already present in the dish via the jalapenos and the tomatillo sauce, made for a very spicy dish that I had to wash down with milk -- I didn't mind, I'm just saying it is already pretty spicy.
I thought the chicken was a little dry, but we're talking microwave meal here, so the salsa and tomatillo sauce were enough to offset that. The cheese was really good, very gooey and not at all that gross, mealy texture you sometimes get with diet and/or pre-packaged foods, and it also tasted like real cheese. The enchiladas were by far the superior of the two dishes, and I would not hesitate to grab them again -- maybe do it for breakfast with a sunny-side egg on top. At 440 calories, I think you could add a side salad and have this for dinner, too.
Both of these meals were less than $4, and both were filling and satisfying. Texturally, foods cooked or reheated in the microwave always leave something to be desired, but nothing is stopping you from transferring this into a small oven-safe dish and heating it to the recommended 165 °F -- slightly less fast, but potentially delicious. My curiosity is piqued, and I look forward to trying more from My Fit Foods. I suspect playing around with the cooking/reheating methods will yield excellent results.
