I'm pretty much a kolache novice. Before my experience Sunday morning (after a crazy trip to cover/shop the Jason Wu for Target event) I had had exactly two kolaches: a pumpkin-filled one from Sinfull Bakery and a random kolache my husband bought me when I was drunk, the contents of which I can't even remember. Technically, I think this kolache might count as my first, and since I've driven by Christy's Donuts three times a week for two years without going in, this ended up being one cherry-popping Sunday morning.
I have to admit, I don't really know what I'm supposed to be looking for in a kolache--it seems like people have very specific ideas about what makes the perfect one, but everyone's ideas are different.
The sausage, cheese, and jalapeno kolache seemed like the only good option to kick-start my brain after Battle Jason Wu. A friend had come along for the retail ride, and she snagged some donuts, so I also got to try a glazed donut hole. Note: I worked at Dunkin Donuts for years and generally hate donuts, but the Christy's glazed donut hole was delish--warm, yeasty, fluffy, with great caramelization on the donut. I will return for donuts!
As for my kolache, it was good but not mind-blowing and I have come to understand that there are mind-blowing kolaches to be had. I loved the sweet dough, and the spicy sausage and jalapeno, but there wasn't much cheese, so that was disappointing. I was so hungry I could have eaten four of these little guys, and at Christy's prices I could afford to -- a huge cinnamon twist and three kolaches (one for my husband, one for my friend) came to $5 and change. I can see how these little guys could become a morning staple, but I need more information on what to look for...and that's where you guys come in.
