Health Department Roundup: KFC, Pizza Buffets and the Wok of Shame

We're going to start with a tale from fast food. The KFC at 6505 Hillcroft had a pretty good inspection -- the only issues the city turned up were floors not in good repair and not enough light in working areas. That's nice and all, but according to our mom, who worked at a KFC when she was in high school, the inspections used to be a little more high stakes -- the Colonel himself actually dropped in on stores in full regalia. During one inspection, he fired a fry cook for having nudie centerfolds taped to the walls of the freezer. No more free gizzards for that guy; we hope he got to keep his ladies, at least. And before you say, "That's what you get for pissing off a colonel," keep in mind that if you demonstrate a basic ability to read and write in Kentucky, they'll give you an honorary degree from UK and make you the prince of some place like Radcliff. It's okay work.

More fast food stuff -- don't tell Guy Clark, but the Taco Cabana at 8905 Richmond got a citation after an inspection turned up three violations. Those issues were kitchenware/food-contact surfaces not washed, rinsed and sanitized often enough to prevent potential contamination; single-use articles not stored in a way that prevents contamination; and potentially hazardous food not stored at proper temperatures.

In buffet news, the soon-to-be CiCi's Pizza at 935 N. Shepherd had a clean pre-opening inspection. Most pre-opening inspections don't turn up too much, but this is notable because there will soon be a place for Heights residents to go to take a couple months off their lives. Besides Shiloh Club. Master Wok (5015 Westheimer) had a pretty rough go, earning a citation for five violations. The worst problems were "conditions of premises affording the harborage/feeding of insects/rodents" and food stored in unclean or uncovered containers.

Airline Seafood, a fish market at 1841 Richmond, got hit with a couple violations but no citations. There was the issue of food that was either spoiled or mislabeled (we wish the city would distinguish between the two, especially with seafood), as well as a write-up for insufficient ventilation to get rid of smoke, fumes and "obnoxious odors." At a seafood market, can you imagine?

Food truck roundup: Phamily Bites, which apparently has some excellent pho and banh mi, got written up for not holding food at proper temperatures and for not sanitizing cleaning cloths between uses. Both were corrected on site and no citation was issued. Coreanos, however, got a citation for two violations -- employee without proper hair restraint, and the likely kicker, no certified manager on duty.
