Although I am still mourning the demise of Oreo-O's in the United States (one more reason to visit South Korea), I was somewhat cheered by the appearance of new Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme cereal in my local Randalls.
It's been years since I ate a Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme candy bar, but I do remember thinking it was decent (not quite as good, though, as the Cookies 'n' Mint bar). I did not, however, have any expectation that this cereal, or any cereal, for that matter, would exactly replicate the taste of a candy bar. Unlike the good people at Kellogg's, I do not think Special K is a perfect replacement for after-dinner chocolate. Satisfying, perhaps, but still a simulacrum.
"Sorta close" to Hersheys Cookie's 'n' Creme candy bar was my hope.
Not so much, but that's okay; you know why? Because while it didn't taste at all like the candy bar (lacking the latter's lovely vanilla cream flavor laced with deep chocolate crunch), Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme cereal boasts a chocolate-mixed-with-vanilla cookie flavor. You could probably achieve a similar effect if you mixed cocoa puffs with (if they existed) vanilla Kix, but Hershey's has saved you some time.
While eating a second serving of the cereal later at night, I discovered that using warm milk really brings out the cookies and cream flavor, especially if you let the little balls marinate for a few minutes. Never fear; they retain their starchy, crunchy integrity even in the midst of heavy milk immersion, so there's little risk of accidentally transforming your "dry" cereal into porridge.
Given the degree to which warm milk improves Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme cereal, I wonder about the effect of warm chocolate milk. Certainly, as a general rule chocolate milk makes everything better, but perhaps that much cocoa would ultimately mask the "creme" component of the cereal. I dunno. That's a project for another breakfast.
