Hot Plate

The carnitas ($5.99) at the food stall at Mi Tienda (1630 Spencer Hwy., 713-941-7550), HEB's Mexican-themed store, are delicious. They're different from other carnitas in that they're not fried chunks of pork; instead, they're almost like pulled pork, with a flavor that will stay with you for a long time. When you order the combo plate, you get almost a full pound of carnitas along with the smoothest refried beans you may ever have tried, some Spanish rice and tortillas. A quick trip to the condiment bar, and you can customize your plate with wedges of lime, three different salsas, cilantro, pico de gallo and chopped onions and jalapeños, just in case you need an extra kick.
