Houston's 5 Best Weekend Food Bets: Beer Week Is Almost Here

Head to the East End's "Restaurant Row'" for a day of fun, food, music, and Latin culture. The all day event will feature a taco cook-off, 18 live bands on two full stages, chef cooking demonstrations, a Historical Bike-A-Thon, mechanical bull riding, 30 community and craft exhibit booths, climbing walls, wandering entertainers and a special kid's block with a 10-foot taco pinata. Proceeds will go to scholarships for up to 20 ($4K) scholarships, including one honoring Leonel Castillo through matching LULAC funds and other Hispanic cultural arts programs.

Berliner Weisse Day @ The Hay Merchant Saturday 1100 Westheimer

Great news, suds lovers: Houston Beer Week begins this Saturday! The Hay Merchant is kicking off the eight-day celebration by putting together the largest selection of Berliner Weisse and sour wheat beers ever to be on tap in Houston. Stop by to get a taste of their dry hopped cask of the new Berliner Red Bud from Independence Brewing. Saint Arnold will be on hand with their housemade syrups for Boiler Room and free Boiler Room glasses from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Veggie Riot Chef Showdown @ Houstonia House Saturday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. 447 Heights

Close out VegOut! 2015 with Houstonia Magazine's fierce veggie competition. Get tickets ($30 for one, $25 each for 2 or more, $50 for VIP) to watch as top area chefs from Dish Society, Jonathan's The Rub, KUU, and more compete to make the most mouthwatering veggie-based dish in town. Admission includes unlimited tastings, live music and a photo booth, and three tickets to the full bar, with additional drink tickets available for purchase.

Chef Justin Turner is taking guests "Out to the Ball Game" for a special, multi-course meal with spins on ballpark faves. Chow down on things like a housemade smoked chorizo "hot dog" with pickled ramp soubise and tobacco onions and crispy pretzel gougers with 8th Wonder cheese fondue and Allen Benton ham.
