It's National Cupcake Day: Ten Cupcake Bakeries That Will Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

I don't care what anyone else says, cupcakes are awesome. I have said it before and I will say it again, why wouldn't you want a cupcake? It's a personal dessert all to yourself, and there is a perfect proportion of frosting to cake; cupcakes will always make me a very happy girl.

Today is the day you should put your negative thoughts about the cupcake craze being overrated aside and just eat a dang cupcake because today is National Cupcake Day. Here are ten places in Houston where you can get your cupcake fix and satisfy that sweet tooth. If there's any day it is completely justified to splurge on a cupcake, today is the day. It's also Monday, so you should start your week off on a good note, or a sweet note.

10. Gigi's Cupcakes

Gigi's Cupcakes has three locations around town, including the newest location downtown in the tunnels of the JPMorgan Chase Tower. Gigi's makes some of the prettiest cupcakes with creative ingredients, like the Hunka Chunka Banana Love cupcake topped with a banana chip or the Lemon Ice Box cupcake where the lemon cake is filled with cream cheese and topped with cream cheese frosting studded with crushed vanilla wafer cookies. In fact, you can get this refreshingly sweet and tart cupcake on National Cupcake Day because it's available on Mondays.

9. Three Brothers Bakery

I absolutely love the cupcakes at Three Brothers Bakery because the cake itself is so moist. For me, the frosting on any cupcake can be too much, and more times than not I end up eating the whole cake with just a little bit of frosting, so the cake is the most important part to me. Because Three Brothers Bakery creates amazing cakes every day, the cupcakes are jumbo and fully decorated. Kids will love the baseball cupcakes (they actually look like baseballs, how cool?) and the M&M jumbo cupcake. Majority of these cupcakes are filled with either a custard, fudge or crème filling, so you're in for a treat and a sugar high. Don't say I didn't warn you.

8. Treat Cupcakes

For those of you who live near Vintage Park, Treat Cupcakes is the place to go on National Cupcake Day. These cupcakes are piled high with frosting and there's always a little decoration to go on top, like a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce for the Salted Caramel and Samoa cupcakes, or simply a fondant medallion with the bakery's name. Treat knows how to pack a lot of flavor into its cupcakes, like the Choco-nutter, a chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache and topped with peanut butter buttercream frosting garnished with chocolate chips and a drizzle of caramel sauce, or the sweet and salty Maple Bacon cupcake, complete with a maple buttercream frosting.

7. Celebrity Cupcakes

I love the elegance and fanciness about Celebrity Cupcakes' treats. The glamorously decorated cupcakes definitely feel fit for a cupcake store on Rodeo Drive with the frosting covered in sparkles and the cute, charming decorations on top of many cupcakes. You can definitely tell that the buttercream frosting is made with real butter, too - an added bonus for someone looking for an outstanding cupcake. Indulge in the Classic Vanilla cupcake or Southern Red Velvet in honor of National Cupcake Day; these are two of the best cupcakes that Celebrity Cupcakes offers and they are both offered every day. Fleur De Sel, Key Lime and Hummingbird are also great choices.

6. Ooh La La Bakery

Joanna O'Leary recently shared her views about Ooh La La's newest cupcake, the S'mores cupcake, and if that's not enough to send you straight to the bakery for an uberly sweet and over-the-top (but not in a bad way) cupcake, then maybe a few of these cupcakes will: Velvet Elvis, Pretty in Pink and Boston Cream Pie. Each of the cupcakes sold at Ooh La La can be jumbo or mini, so if you're in the mood to share a cupcake (or not), opt for the Turtle cupcake sold on Monday - it's a chocolate cake filled with ooey-gooey caramel and topped with a chocolate buttercream frosting, chocolate AND caramel sauces, chocolate chips and pecans. Yeah, that's a cupcake worthy of celebrating National Cupcake Day.

5. What's Up, Cupcake?

What's Up, Cupcake? has a variety of classic and intriguing flavors that make up its everyday cupcake lineup, but trust me when I say that the Salted Caramel cupcake will rock your world. Not only is the caramel buttercream frosting studded with tiny drops of caramel sauce and a sprinkling of salt, the caramel cake itself has a luscious salted caramel filling; quite the unexpected, delicious surprise. You're going to enjoy the cake upon the first few bites, but once you reach the center, you're going to fall in love. For something a little less extravagant, the Strawberry, Vanilla Bean and Wedding Cake are perfect options for a classic cupcake.

4. Petite Sweets

Sometimes you need just a little bite of something sweet to satisfy that sugary craving. Petite Sweets is your answer. While Petite Sweets may offer small cupcakes, that doesn't mean they don't go for big flavor, like the Cinnamon Toast Crunch cupcake, Salty Caramel or Black Bottom Red Velvet. But, do yourself a favor and splurge a little on cupcake's national holiday by getting the Bacon Jam Pancake cupcake. BRC Gastropub provides the bacon jam for this outstanding sweet and salty combination; bacon jam inside of a cupcake is definitely what the doctor ordered.

3. Fluff Bake Bar

While the classic cupcake is all well and good, Fluff Bake Bar thinks it's time for something different; welcome, the cup|cake. Rather than a thick portion of cake topped with frosting, Fluff Bake Bar has stuffed layers of cake and frosting into a cupcake-sized plastic cup, inviting you to shove your spoon or fork down to the bottom to scoop out all of the delightfully sweet and moist layers. These cup|cakes are uberly sweet, and trust me, you probably want to split one with someone (no shame if you don't). For a twist on a classic, try Fluff's Red Velvet cup|cake; it's a cross between red velvet and black forest. Super sweet cream cheese frosting, cherry jam and chocolate pearls are nestled between layers of moist and luscious red velvet cake. The Birthday Cake is also a delightful, yet very sweet, treat; you can't go wrong with funfetti cake, vanilla buttercream frosting and cake crumbs dispersed throughout the frosting. Head on over to Revival Market, Inversion Coffee House, Southside Espresso, Max's Wine Dive or Eatsie Boys for one of Fluff Bake Bar's cup|cakes.

2. Sprinkles Cupcakes

The simplicity in the design and recipe for these cupcakes makes the cupcakes at Sprinkles Cupcakes some of the best around town. Sprinkles doesn't need to go crazy on the decorations, or go over the top with crazy ingredients and flavors in the cake and frosting; I love how each cupcake is so simple, yet so delicious. Whether you're in the mood for something chocolaty and sweet, like the Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate or Peanut Butter Chocolate, or want something a little lighter like the Lemon, Orange or Banana, Sprinkles has got the hook up. The frosting is creamy and sweet, the cake is moist and luscious and the combination of the two is everything you're looking for in a cupcake. You can't go wrong with a classic. Oh and the little wooden spoon that comes with each cupcake may prolong the time you spend eating the cupcake, but who wants a sweet treat to end, anyway?

1. CRAVE Cupcakes

To celebrate National Cupcake Day, what better place to visit than the Houston-based cupcake bakery that has won over our hearts and taste buds? While many times too much frosting can be overly sweet and a turn-off for customers, the frosting on these large cupcakes is super addicting. Whether you want a cleanly frosted cupcake, or one coated in sprinkles, CRAVE has you covered. I love the simple chocolate with vanilla frosting; it satisfies every sweet craving of mine. CRAVE now offers gluten-free, vegan and sugar-free cupcakes, so there really is something for everyone.
