May is National Burger Month, that special time when you can channel your inner Hamburglar. Burgerphiles can sample their way through the specials around town, while the ne'er-branch-outs can perhaps be tempted to try something new. Here are a few Houston restaurants spreading the burger love, starting tomorrow, May 1.

Have you tried Hupcap Grill yet? The diminutive little place has won rave reviews from clients all over town, but owner Ricky Craig just won't quit until every Houstonian has tried his burger. Stop by during the month of May for this fabulous Burger Month Special: A regular burger plus fries (or chips) and a canned drink for just $5. This offer is good Mondays throughs Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. only.

VOICE is known for its upscale setting and menu, but Chef Michael Kramer sure knows how to make a low-down-dirty burger. Hit it up after work for a burger and a beer. The VOICE "Two for Tuesdays" promotion features your choice of burger (including a veggie option) and a draft beer for just $10, which also includes a side salad or Parmesan fries.

The chefs at Sushi Raku have created a special "Burger Nirvana" menu for the month of May, available seven days a week at happy hour. Most prominent is the slider plate -- two Kobe Beef Sliders, plus a small carafe of sake for $9. Not a meat eater? Try the Spider Slider, an off-shoot of the classic that marries soft shell crab and caramelized onions.

The sultry Strip House offers a semi-interactive special for the month of May: a create-your-own-burger special for $14.95. First, choose your meat -- Black Angus, chicken, buffalo or tuna. Then add a cheese (American, Cheddar, Swiss or Stilton). You can top it with BLT, grilled jalapeños, seared fois gras or sautéed mushrooms, and then pick a side: herbed fries, fried onions or sweet potato fries. The cherry on top is the $2 pint of St. Arnold's you can get alongside. Available in the lounge area only.

Smashburger is offering a month of savings at all eight H-Town locations. While the place is already a deal year-round, for the month of May you can register online for various offers - things like free Smashfries, free kids meals, and even a free Smashburger.
