The ham and cheese empanadas ($2.25 each) at Argentina Cafe (3055 Sage, 713-622-8877) may well be the best and least expensive snack in the city, although it is unlikely that just one will stave off hunger pangs. Like everything else in this tiny coffee shop, the half moon-shaped pastries are pinched together by hand. Packed with a delicious ham and Swiss cheese filling mixed with onions, the empanadas are covered with an egg wash before baking. They emerge from the oven hot and crisp, so give them a few minutes to cool off before tearing into them.
