Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #52 Moules Frites at Jeanine's Bistro
Jeannine's Bistro at 106 Westheimer serves my favorite moules frites. This is the Belgian version of fast food -- a pot of mussels steamed in white wine and a big paper cone full of excellent Belgian frites with homemade mayonnaise. (Don't call them French fries here, the Belgians invented them.) The large order of moules frites at Jeanine's, which comes with two dozen mussels, is a bargain at $19. It's a nice lunch, light supper or first course for two. You also get a basket full of crunchy bread to dunk in the mussel-flavored wine stock at the bottom of the pot.
The restaurant has a great selection of Belgian beers, and most of them are half-price during happy hour. Jeannine's also offers some very affordable three-course dinner specials. Try the crème brulée crepe or the profiteroles for dessert. Jeannine's Bistro and Broken Spoke are the dueling Belgian moules frites restaurants in town. Both are descendants of the late great Café Montrose.
