Sampler Plate: This Week in Food Blogs

Each week, we put together a sampler plate of the most interesting links from both local and national food blogs. Know a blog we should be paying particular attention to? Leave the address in the comments section below.

Weapons Grade: How excited am I that Central Market's beer and wine guy Justin Vann has started a blog? Very. Read his latest post on nerding out in New Orleans and you'll be, too. Aside from being just plain hilarious ("Maybe its underwhelming when you actually try it. Or maybe its so good you trip balls and talk to dead family members and figure out the meaning of life."), Vann brings up some very good points about beer availability and beer sales in Texas. Among them, he laments the lack of attention that's paid to beer as it is to wine: "I feel like in my corner of the world, there are not any beer places that strive to serve really fine food, and no fine restaurants that have a desire to have an esoteric, if not comprehensive beer program."

Jack Tyler Dines: Speaking of raising important issues, Jack Tyler asks a topical question in his latest blog post: Are food bloggers ruining the restaurant business? Tyler has his own answer -- "...even our print media food writers are also bloggers. I suggest that restaurateurs and chefs accept the fact that overall, food bloggers are good for their businesses" -- but what are your thoughts?

29-95: Alison Cook takes her own first look at El Real Tex-Mex Cafe and finds it uneven, although most new restaurants usually are. What I find interesting is how divided people have been on both the salsa and margaritas. I'm already a devoted fan of the warm, meaty salsa and when the margaritas are done right, they're exceptional. But the last few visits have yielded the same chemical-tasting margaritas that Alison experienced...

PSFK: On the national scene, this short and sweet post sums up why our mounting obsession with "food porn" is becoming more and more irresponsible as "our priorities in the global community have gone awry."

Dr. Ricky: And on the lighter side of things, if you think a waffle iron can only be used for one thing, Dr. Ricky would like to show you a few alternative uses.
