Spending Sunday at Sorrel Urban Bistro

Everyone knows that during football season, my Sundays are reserved for all-day game watching. I'm in two fantasy football leagues, and I'm a diehard Texans fan (they're undefeated, for those of you who are living under a rock). I typically watch the games at my local sports bar with other crazed football fans, but this past Sunday, with the Texans playing on Monday night, I decided to do something a little different.

Sorrel Urban Bistro is a farm-to-table restaurant with a daily changing menu dependent on what fresh ingredients they can source. I enjoyed my first visit there for dinner and promised myself I would return but hadn't had a chance to, so brunch was the perfect opportunity. Brunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can dine in the main dining area, at their chef's tables where you can watch all the action, outside or in the bar area, where thankfully there are televisions playing sports, albeit without the sound. Wherever you choose, the restaurant is open, bright and airy. It's a good fit with the bistro moniker -- it's fine dining, but still very relaxed. It was a perfect place for a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Oh, and they have 99 cent mimosas.

There's a lot of variety on the brunch menu, and you won't find just your typical eggs and bacon. Sure, they have a breakfast plate, but it comes with sage biscuits, and yes, they have pancakes, but they're bacon-infused. The omelet is stuffed with queso fresco and served with a tomato compote.

I went with the seared scallop with goat cheese grits, asparagus, quail egg and gremolata. The plate arrived with four large scallops perfectly seared and caramelized on top and medium-rare in the center. The quail eggs perched beautifully on top of it all. The flavor of the grits was spot-on, with the goat cheese not too dominant. The only misstep was that they were a little dry, with more of a polenta texture, but I love my grits creamy. My dining companion went with the queso fresco omelet. The sizable omelet was very good, the best part being the sweet, smoky tomato compote. We ordered a side of pommes frites, and though they arrived looking perfect, they were the most disappointing part of the meal, as they were soggy and flavorless. I kept digging through the bowl hoping for a stray tiny fry that had some crunch to it. The meal was overall very satisfying, and I'm definitely coming back this time -- plans have already been made for a brunch with some girlfriends.

I have to note that the service was very pleasant. The bartender was our main server, but there were times where the manager would keep our glasses refilled or other servers walking by the televisions to check the score would also check in on us. It was friendly and inviting, and a great new place I've discovered to watch the games on Sundays. And did I mention they have 99 cent mimosas?
