Texas Traveler: Bryan

Messina Hof Winery makes some of the best wines in Texas. In fact, their "Angel" late-harvest Riesling won the Best in Texas award at the Rodeo several years in a row. The winery offers tours for the public and group tours by reservation. There's a tasting room where you buy wines and snacks for a picnic, and there's also an elegant restaurant where you can drink wine with a nice meal. The restaurant overlooks a vineyard, and at this time of year, the greenery is lovely.

Messina Hof is an hour and a half north of Houston, a few miles from Bryan. There's also a bed and breakfast on the premises, and you can book private massages and other spa services, which is why it's called a "Winery and Resort." If you make it up there this Sunday (May 24), you can catch a Memorial Day party from 5 to 8 p.m. featuring grilled sausage by Slovacek Meat Market and live music by Puente, an acoustic blues group from New Orleans, along with your wine.
