The Bar at River Oaks Theatre

We recently caught a showing of Crazy Heart at River Oaks Theatre on West Gray. You know what we love about this theater? You can buy a beer here, and we don't mean in a paper cup - you can purchase a beer like you would in a bar, Heineken for $5 to enjoy with a decent bag of popcorn. And the cliché of spending a small fortune at the theater doesn't apply here. For the price of a medium Diet Coke at an AMC, you can get an imported beer.

Of course, watching a movie about a has-been country singer with a drinking problem might not seem like the time to be drinking beer in a theater, but hey, at least we weren't sneaking a six-pack of Miller High Life tall-boys into Leaving Las Vegas! That was another time...

Support the independent voice of Houston and help keep the future of Houston Press free.

Keep the Houston Press Free... Since we started the Houston Press, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Houston, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Houston with no paywalls.
