This Week in Food Blogs: Spicy Nuts and Tennessee-Style Barbecue

From the Gutt: Does every wine drinker's palate matter? That's the question posed this week by local wine blogger Tom Gutting, who writes that it's "silly to think that an 'expert' taster's opinion, such as that of Robert Parker or James Laube or James Suckling, should be given dictatorial deference."

Blue Jean Gourmet: Forget peanuts in a jar or overly sugared beer nuts for your fall football viewing get-togethers. Try this classed-up recipe (with Angostura bitters!) from Nishta Mehra for Spiced Nuts instead. As a bonus, the mix goes great with Saint Arnold Oktoberfest.

Chili Bob's Houston Eats: It's no Franklin or J. Mueller, but Bruce has found some excellent non-Texas barbecue at Andy's Wild Hawg Bar-B-Que in Pasadena. He writes: "There must have been close to 8 ounces of meat on that large bun. The meat was tender and juicy and just a tad smoky -- smokiness does not seem to be that big a factor in Tennessee style barbeque." I'm sold.

29-95: For her dish of the week, Houston Chronicle food critic Alison Cook visits Grand Prize Bar for the first time to sample some of Yaki Snack Attack's excellent offerings. Instead of Southern-style dim sum, the most recent Yaki menu featured Malaysian-style curry laksa.

Houston Chronicle: Elsewhere in the Chronicle, David Kaplan reports on a lawsuit against Upper Kirby clubs and bars such as Roak and OTC that's resulted in an interesting countersuit...for racial discrimination.

Eater Houston: Lastly, it's time for another helpful map from Eater Houston. This week, it's 11 of the city's favorite Americanized Chinese restaurants. My old high school hangout Ta Hua even made the list.
