This Week in Food Blogs: Waffle Cone Love & Homemade Vanilla Extract

Houston Chronicle: Even though Alison Cook says she typically enjoys the ice cream more than the cone, she has fallen in love with the brown-butter waffle cones at Fat Cat Creamery. Her first taste of these homemade waffle cones was served with a scoop of Railean-Rum-laced eggnong ice cream and a scoop of brown-butter praline. After finishing those two scoops, she couldn't help but finish the brown-butter waffle cone. There's nothing better than the smell of homemade waffle cones, especially when made with brown butter.

H-Town Chow Down: The guys checked out Umami, a new family-owned Korean restaurant in Magnolia. They enjoyed a bulgogi bento box, which they describe as a Korean beef dish served as a Japanese lunch. Surprisingly, the waiter's recommendation turned out much better than they expected: Tender beef with fried rice, and a California roll, were all seasoned and prepared excellently.

Adventures in a New(ish) City: Kim definitely enjoyed the sunny, perfectly breezy weather over the weekend. So much that she decided to visit Pondicheri and sit outside on the patio. In search of ordering something different, Kim chose the Keema Frankie, which is an egg wrap with beef keema, caramelized onions, tomatoes, yogurt and spices; it's basically an Indian burrito. While sipping on a shandy, she couldn't help but wish it were summer time.

The Pancake Princess: Erika made potstickers with her family all the time as a child. She remembers the dumplings filled with ground turkey, napa cabbage, onions, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, rice vinegar and, of course, soy sauce. But, she decided to recreate these addictive little snacks with tofu and kale instead of turkey and cabbage, and was definitely satisfied with the overall flavor.

Culinary Houston: We all, from time to time, display what others might call bad table manners, whether at a cheap fast food restaurant or a fine-dining restaurant. Jack Tyler lists the top ten ways to prove table manners mean absolutely nothing to you, such as picking food out of your teeth at the table or stacking as much food as possible on your plate when going through the buffet line.
