This Week in Houston Food Events: French Restaurants Celebrate Julia Child's Birthday

All Month Long

Houston Restaurant Weeks

Don't forget that this fundraiser is in full-swing all month and into September! Not sure where to go to celebrate? Check out our list of new Houston restaurants that are participating in this year's Houston Restaurant Weeks.

French Wine Summer-Cleaning Sale

Do you have a hankering for some very unique French wines? You'd better head over to French Country Wines this month as they prepare their storerooms for new fall wine shipments. They've got many single bottles whose brethren have all been sold, as well as sample bottles that will be uncorked during their weekly Saturday tastings at noon. You can also go to tastings on Wednesday nights at 5 p.m. Visit the website to know what's on sale and what's being sampled each week. 2433 Bartlett.

Monday, August 10

The State of Zin

Join Spec's wine buyer Bear Dalton for this in-depth class on Zinfandel wines, including how they're made, what makes them distinct from other wines and what foods they pair best with. There will be tastings of 13 wines from Sonoma County during the class, along with bread and cheese. Reserve your spot by calling 713-854-7855. L'Alliance Française, 427 Lovett, 7 p.m. $60

Free Breakfast Tacos at Taco Cabana

Popular quick-food chain Taco Cabana is so excited about lowering their egg prices that they're celebrating by giving everyone a free breakfast taco, assuming they have a certain coupon from Taco Cabana's social media sites, which will be posted on the morning of August 10. This celebration is in response to the recent egg shortage, which caused Taco Cabana to hike their prices by 10 cents per taco with eggs and 20 cents per burrito. No purchase is required for this eggstravaganza, so feel free to just run in to any location for that taco!

Julia Child's Birthday at La Madeleine

In honor of the great French chef Julia Child, La Madeleine will be offering free mini chocolate tarts topped with almonds, which was Child's favorite dessert. Just stop into any location and tell someone "Joyeux Anniversaire, Julia Child!" (which is happy birthday) to get your free treat.

Wednesday, August 12

Queen's Birthday Celebration at Khun Kay Thai

It's the 83rd birthday of the Thai Queen, Queen Sirikit, whose birthday is also the Thai Mother's Day (not a coincidence). Khun Kay Thai Café is offering special dishes that will be available for the rest of the month in honor of the Queen's birthday celebration, the most exceptional of which is a fried soft-shell crab served with noodles. You can also try the popular Summer Wrap with fried cod and mango for a lighter option. 1209 Montrose; regular hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. weekdays and noon to 9:30 p.m. on weekends.

Northern Italian Wines at Rainbow Lodge

This four-course meal features Mediterranean chopped salad, caponata, duck ragu and Grand Marinier Tirimasu... Are we forgetting something? Oh, the four wines from northern Italy that accompany the meal! The fare may be fancy, but the attire is easy casual and the vibe is relaxed mingling for the Rainbow Lodge's monthly wine meal. Check out the website for more details. 2011 Ella, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. $35

Sundown at The Grove has Beer and Bites

Every Wednesday between now and September 9, you can find beer flights from various craft breweries and custom cuisine to pair with the brews at The Grove. Brewmasters will be there to mingle with you, and DJ Sun will provide tunes. There will be giveaways, including tickets from presenting sponsor Southwest Airlines. This week's feature is Belgian beer. Reservations are recommended, which you can make via The Grove website, and you can get season tickets for $250 per person or $450 per couple. 1611 Lamar, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. $20

Nine of Landry's Executive Chefs, as well as Executive Pastry Chef Eunice Grassa, will prepare and present the dishes at the grand finale of Landry's annual Chef's Series. Meats from Black Hill Ranch will be featured, such as the pork belly pappardelle and the dry aged strip loin, and attendees will also experience poached Gulf prawn and Gulf snapper. Check out the full menu on the Landry's website. Call 713-228-1111 for reservations. Vic & Anthony's, 1510 Texas, 7 p.m. $150

Weekend Concert Festivities as Quattro

If you're going to see Sam Smith or Kevin Hart this weekend at the Toyota Center, you might consider going to Quattro at the Four Seasons beforehand. If you know anything about Houston, you know that the free parking offer alone is practically irresistible— then there's the amazing food!
