Top 5 Supermarket Ice Cream Treats for Summer 2013

Although I plan to spend a fair amount of time this summer at Fat Cat Creamery's ice cream parlor, I can't possibly go there every night without 1) the owners issuing some sort of food restraining order and 2) going into massive debt. In between visits, I plan to satisfy my ice cream treat cravings with any of these five grocery store treats.

5. Blue Bunny Chocolate Raspberry Ice Cream Bar.

This ice cream novelty is a terrific fruity riff on the traditional chocolate-covered popsicle bar. A slightly bitter coating of dark chocolate delightfully contrasts with sweet white chocolate ice cream, through which runs a thick stream of berry syrup. They're more often found at convenience stores, so don't spend too much time searching larger chain supermarkets.

4. Reese's Ice Cream Cup.

Although there's never a bad time for a regular Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, summer proves to be a challenging season for the storage and consumption of chocolate. Plus, too much peanut butter has a way of slowing you down in the warmer months. Ice cream is far cooler (in both senses of the word) fuel.

3. Vanilla Caramel Drumstick.

In an ideal world, I'd have a Nutty Buddy, but the original version of this product is difficult to locate. The Drumstick, while different in architecture, presents a similar sugar cone/chocolate/vanilla ice cream/peanuts flavor profile with the added bonus of a surprise decadent inner scope of caramel.

2. Heath Klondike Bar.

What would you do for a Klondike Bar? Eh, nothing particularly crazy for the regular kind, but the Heath Bar variety? Oh man, I dunno -- sell my baby sister? Actually, wait, that's a horrible idea because she's a super-smart lawyer that would sue me for everything I've got. But I would go to great lengths for this confection, which combines the soft vanilla ice cream with the crunchy, buttery bite of toffee for a treat diverse in taste and texture.

1. Toll House Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Yes, yes, yes, you can most definitely make better versions of this treat at home. But on nights when you've put all your energy into making artisan burgers with homemade cheese, you just can't manage to rustle up the dough for cookies and watch a hot oven. Let Nestlé do both for you, and while they're at it, slap a hefty scoop of vanilla ice cream in between two soft-baked specimens and call it dessert.
