Upcoming Events: Food Holidays, A Culinary Trip Around the World & More

On Monday, September 23, Central Market hosts yet another beer and food class in the Brewniversity cooking class series. During Beer & Bites, the Central Market experts will explain how to pair beer with food; after just one hour you will walk away with more knowledge about lagers, ales, pilsners and bocks, and will have a better understanding of the types of foods you should pair them with. Did you know that spicy foods are perfect with an IPA? For $25, you'll sample five distinctly different brews from around the world and pair each with small bites.

After you drink beer from around the world, take a food and wine trip across the globe at Maggiano's Little Italy on Thursday, September 26. Executive Chef Parker has created a five-course dinner for the Around the World Wine Dinner, which will begin in France with baked brie served with raspberry sauce and proscuitto with melon; it will be paired with Chateau de Capuget Rosé. Next, you will travel to California and feast on SoCal cioppino paired with Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay. Then you will head south to Argentina for an endive and mixed greens salad with a sweet basil dressing, paired with Tamari Malbec. For the fourth course, it's Italy and beef braciole, with Frescobaldi "Remole." Your movable feast ends in Portugal, and a dessert of almond cake and Taylor 10 Port.Tickets for the event cost $80.

Do you want to see Houston's best sommeliers duke it out to be crowned the 2013 Iron Sommelier? Thirteen sommeliers will select three wines focused on a specific wine region, grape or style, then present them to guests and judges. The event takes place at The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Thursday, September 26. Guests will be able to speak with the sommeliers, including last year's winner, Ben Roberts, of Masraff's, Adele Corrigan of 13 Celsius Wine Bar and Jason Sherman of Brennan's of Houston, and will cast their votes for the People's Choice Award. Neal Cox, executive chef of The Houstonian, will create food pairings to enjoy throughout the night. Tickets are $150 each.

National Taco Day is on October 4, but Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen is kicking off the celebration early on October 1. Executive Chef Sylvia Casares has created a sampler featuring four tacos (beef fajita, chicken fajita, carnitas and cabrito) served with all the fixings (avocado, lime, onions, cilantro and charro beans); the sampler is available from October 1 through October 4 at both locations.

On Tuesday, October 1, RA Sushi is celebrating "Nihonshu no Hi," otherwise known as International Sake Day. Now that's a food-centric holiday we can get behind. At both RA Sushi locations you can join in on the celebration with hot and cold sake deals, including $1 hot sake, Hakutsuru "Draft" sake for $5, or a sake flight of three, 2-ounce tastings for $7. Whether you're a fan of the rice wine or have never tried it, enjoy the discounts at RA Sushi all day on October 1.
