Upcoming Events: Food Truck Fridays and Feliz Cumpleaños to El Gran Malo

Do you take a little extra tima at lunch on Fridays? If so, come and spend it with us. Starting in September, the Houston Press will be hosting Food Truck Fridays on the first Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the House of Deréon (2204 Crawford). Every Food Truck Friday will feature a different roster of four food trucks -- three savory and one sweet -- as well as a special treat from our friends at Saint Arnold.

The first Food Truck Friday will roll in on September 7 and feature the following trucks: H-Town StrEATs, Bernie's Burger Bus, Stick It and MMM Cupcake. Plenty of outdoor seating space will be available, so bring your buddies and an appetite.

The night before, Midtown will be home to yet another big party: Mid-Main First Thursday, supporting ParksByYou, a coalition of citizens committed to increasing access to and improving neighborhood parks and bayous in Houston.

The Mid-Main block party will feature food and drink specials from area businesess Natachee's, Tacos a-Go-Go, Sparrow Cooktop + Bar, Julia's and The Continental Club.

In addition to the specials, there will be activities such as a free movie screening of Pee-wee's Big Adventure at 7:30 p.m. at Natachee's and live music from BEETLE at The Continental Club - also for free. The festivities run from 5 to 10 p.m. and 5 percent of the profits from all the participating bars and restaurants will go to support ParksByYou.

In celebration of its one-year birthday (although it seems sometimes as though the gastrocantina has always been there), El Gran Malo "El Gran Malo is hosting an anniversary party this Sunday, August 26, from 11 a.m. until midnight. The day-long festivities will include Lotería games, piñatas and the launch of El Gran Malo's brand-new cocktail menu.

Personal favorite Big Little Fudge, the little sweets company headquartered in Montgomery that's gotten, well, big since starting in 2009, will have its national television debut today -- but not on a food network.

Instead, look for Big Little Fudge on QVC's Countdown to Christmas Special (and don't act like you don't watch QVC for fun too) during the Gourmet Holiday Segment from 3 to 5 p.m. Big Little Fudge will be exclusively offering QVC shoppers 24 individually-wrapped packages of fudge in eight different flavors, including Choc A Lot, The Great Divide, Hunka Chunka, Mega Maple Nut, 'Nut 'orious, Big League, Heavyweight Champ and Coconutalot.

Finally, Pollo Campero has added a few new flavors to its mostly Mexican and Central American menu. The Guatemala-based chain has recently revamped its offerings to feature several new South American dishes, including an Argentinean-style steak complete with garlicky chimichurri sauce on top. Other new items range from healthy Peruvian quinoa salads to hearty chicken empanadas stuffed with Peruvian-spiced rotisserie chicken, tomatillo salsa and fresh cilantro.
