I am officially home for the holidays, so Christmas cookie baking has begun. But who says your dog can't enjoy Christmas cookies this year? I always make sure to buy my dog a couple of holiday treats to enjoy on Christmas morning, but when I came across a few Christmas cookies for the dog on Pinterest, I decided to make cookies for my dog this year instead of buying them from the store.
Try making these cookies for your dog this Christmas so he or she can enjoy the holiday festivities, too.
Every ingredient in these cookies or biscuits is edible for humans...not that I tried the dough (Okay, yes, I did -- and it was pretty good. Just needs sugar.)
All you have to do is mix all of the following ingredients together.
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 cups flour
When you put the tablespoon of honey in the dough, use the same measuring spoon from the canola or vegetable oil so the honey will just slide right out of the measuring spoon.
I recommend using a stand mixer because the dough is thick and difficult to mix by hand, but it is possible. Roll the dough flat and slice into small squares -- or if you have dog bone-shaped cookie cutters, use those.
Place the cookie sheet in the oven for 30 minutes at 375 degrees.
The cookies come out of the oven extremely crunchy, just like store-bought dog biscuits.
Once the cookies are cool enough, decorate with a thin layer of cream cheese and non-chocolate sprinkles for a festive touch. If your dog is a fan of peanut butter, I recommend substituting the pumpkin puree for the same amount of creamy peanut butter.
Your dog is sure to enjoy these cookies. Mine definitely did.
