It's going to take a metropolis to get Houston back on its feet. From large-scale rescue efforts to grassroots initiatives, it seems that everybody who is able to lend a hand is stepping up to the plate.

Earlier in the week, Down House on Yale began collecting unused storm supplies from Heights area residents. That soon mushroomed into a large-scale effort as regulars, staffers, former workers and strangers jumped in to help. They already have managed to ferry more than 25 truckloads of supplies to George R. Brown Convention Center, BBVA Compass Stadium, Toyota Center, Forge for Families, Open Door Mission, Baytown, Refugio and other shelters, joining thousands of other Houstonians in this massive relief effort.
