A Prison Cover-up During Hurricane Rita
For days after the storm, inmates in Beaumont lived without A/C, electricity or hot meals. Press releases kept saying everything inside was fine. Guards and prisoners agree — that was nothing but B.S.

This Last Comic Standing star recalls the late, great Bill Hicks
By Nick Keppler
Published: August 2, 2007“[T]his guy seems to be the reincarnation of Bill Hicks,” one YouTube poster commented about a clip of Chris Porter performing on Last Comic Standing. This, of course, is blasphemy, but Porter does have a certain semblance to the late, great Hicks. Both attack American norms and have a grimy, down-home vibe. Porter is fond of tackling those supposedly poignant antidrug commercials, including the infamous one of the girl floating in a swimming pool. “This voice comes on after five seconds [and] goes, ‘Just tell them you were getting stoned; they’ll understand,’” Porter says in his routine. “That’s not an anti-pot scenario; that’s an anti-pool scenario. If you would have had a regular backyard, that kid would have been fine. Stop spoiling the bastards.”
