Bocca Tango

Julio Bocca and Ballet Argentino

Dancer Julio Bocca made his reputation by consistently turning in groundbreaking performances. (His brilliant “The Man in the Red Tie” left the audience breathless the last time he was in town.) His newest production with Ballet Argentino, Bocca Tango, will undoubtedly be another bold, brave performance. As a dancer, Bocca is athletic yet graceful, a pairing that is perfect for the tango, which requires equal parts strength and style. As a choreographer, he is daring and confident. By mixing ballet, modern dance and tango, the 40-year-old Bocca delivers a refreshing take on his homeland’s national dance. Bocca Tango is set to music of Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel, which will be performed by an onstage orchestra.

Sadly, this is Bocca’s farewell tour; he retired from the American Ballet Theatre, where he was a principal dancer, last year and will retire from the stage altogether after this tour. If you see only one dance performance this year, make sure it’s Bocca Tango. 8 p.m. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For tickets and information, call 713-227-4SPA. $21 to $59.
Thu., Nov. 1, 8 p.m., 2007
