Manon

What more could a sensible man want?

For a look at an 18th-century version of girls gone wild, catch Jules Massenet's Manon, opening this week at Opera in the Heights. It's the tale of a pretty teenage girl who lets loose on her way to the convent. In his essay about the opera, OH's Maestro William M. Weibel calls Manon "tender, superficial and quite brainless," adding, "what more could a sensible man want?" Apparently not a lot, as the opera follows Manon through more than one love affair. She doesn't have a happy ending, though she does manage to have some fun on her way to her dreadful fate. And we get to hear her sing Massenet's glorious music while she does it. See Manon at 7:30 p.m.Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Through November 14. 1703 Heights. For information, call 713-861-5303 or visit www.operaintheheights.org. $10 to $35.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Nov. 5. Continues through Nov. 14, 2009
