Cult filmmaker John Waters's Hairspray has seen a few incarnations: a 1988 film starring Ricki Lake and Divine, a 2002 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and a 2007 film remake with Nikki Blonsky and John Travolta. The Broadway musical is on tour and sweeping through Texas. The '60s songfest is about a big girl with an even bigger hairdo who loves to dance and believes in equality for all, regardless of race, size or dancing ability. Her quest to become a dancer on local teen program The Corny Collins Show leads her to even bigger desires Ñ she wants to integrate the show, save her mom and find love with the cutest boy around, all while showing the world that this plus-sized girl has plus-sized talent. Swinging songs like "Good Morning Baltimore," "I Can Hear the Bells" and "Welcome to the '60s" blend with messages about acceptance to create a show that is frothy fun. See Hairspray today at 3 and 8 p.m. The Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice, Galveston. For information, call 409-763-7173 or visit www.thegrand.com. $18.50 to $88.
