Breaking the Code

It’s hard to imagine life without computers these days. But mathematician Alan Turing managed to break the Nazi Enigma Code during WWII with-out so much as a gigabyte of electronic memory. In the mid ’80s, playwright Hugh Whitmore brought Turing’s wondrous accomplishments and diffi-cult life to the stage in the highly successful play Breaking the Code. Turing’s story is a complicated and inspiring one, in part because the great genius was gay during a time when homosexuals were being sent to the gas chambers by the Nazis.
