Opening the Box

Take five former members of Masquerade Theatre (Houston’s pre-eminent Broadway musical revival company), put them in the space formerly occupied by the zanies of Radio Music Theatre (Houston’s pre-eminent comedy show, now sadly shuttered), turn them loose to create original cabaret evenings of music and comedy, and shake vigorously. You’d probably get something like the Music Box Theater, whose grand opening show is called, appropriately enough, Opening the Box.

The stated goal of MBT is to write and produce four, two-act comedies per season, “centered around popular music from across the decades.” With decades of performing expertise among them, Rebekah Dahl, Brad Scarborough, Luke Wrobel, Colton Berry and Cay Taylor have more than enough wattage to light up any venue. 8 p.m. Fridays; 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturdays: 2 p.m. Sundays. Through August 7. 2623 Colquitt. For information, call 281-513-1504 or visit www.themusicboxtheater.com. $25 to $35.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: May 13. Continues through Aug. 7, 2011
