“Texas Zydeco”

Texas and Louisiana have lots more in common than most people might think, including a long history of zydeco music. Photographer James Fraher and author Roger Wood spent years traveling back and forth between Houston and Lafayette documenting the lives of zydeco musicians and fans. The result is a collaborative book the pair released in 2006. The images from that book are the basis for “Texas Zydeco,” an exhibit currently on view at the Museum of Printing History that includes some 40 photos, many taken at Houston locales.

There are several shots of fans on the dance floor — there’s a shot of a couple at Pe-Te’s Cajun BBQ House with members of the Bourbon Street band dancing behind them — and musicians onstage, including a jamming Lady D. But it’s the posed portraits that have the most impact, including one of C. J. Chenier, wearing a Mona Lisa smile along with a cap and reflective shades, with just the top of his accordion showing. There’s also a somber-looking Cedric Powell, with his accordion in mid-swing, posed outside Houston’s Jax Grill. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through August 27.
