Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebrations

Civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. is honored with a variety of activities around town, including three separate parades. There’s the 36th Annual “Original” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade. Started in 1978, this is said to be the first MLK Day parade in the country. (King’s father, the Reverend Martin Luther King Sr., was the grand marshal for that historic event.) Presented by the Black Heritage Society, the parade is just one of several events the organization is hosting. (10 a.m. Minute Maid Park, 501 Crawford. For information, visit originalmlkparade.org. Down the street is the 20th Annual MLK Grande Parade-Midtown Houston. The Grande features some 200 performing groups, including 20 marching bands from across the country. (10 a.m. Midtown-Houston, 1300 Holman. For information, visit mlkgrandeparade.org. Free.)

And finally, it’s the 8th Annual MLK Youth Parade-Midtown. With floats, marching bands and performing groups, the youth parade is the youngest of the three event, and also the most energetic. (Noon. Midtown-Houston, 1300 Holman. For information, visit mlkgrandeparade.org. Free.)
