A homeless man was rescued from a manhole early Sunday morning after somehow getting stuck underground for days, the Houston Fire Department said Monday morning.
Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, a construction company doing repairs near Sam Houston Parkway and Dover Road discovered the man and called 911. HFD arrived and lowered a ladder down 10 to 12 feet into the manhole, right by the Keegans Bayou. But the man couldn’t climb out.
A rescue team then set up a tripod and lowered firefighters into the manhole in a harness, bringing the victim up to safety around 3:15 a.m.
Spokeswoman Sheldra Brigham said the victim told firefighters at first that he had been stuck for nearly a week, then changed his story from three days to two days. She said it was unclear how he got down there, but according to a fire department release, fire crews reported hazardous circumstances to Public Works around the construction site, including several manholes without covers and tall grass obscuring them.
Brigham said the man, who has not been identified, was transported to the hospital with a possible broken foot. His condition is unknown.
