We can’t tell you exactly what to expect at Grown-up Storytime #69, the popular BooTown Theatre Group’s regular series of impromptu performances. That’s because no one knows exactly what will happen until it happens. On the night of the show, storytellers are handed a new work by a local writer and asked to present it to a waiting audience. (Think This American Life but in person and with no rehearsal.)
Organizers Emily Hynds and Lindsay Burleson don’t have to do much prompting for the writers. They usually just tell people to remember the last time some crazy/interesting/weird/compelling thing happened to them, something that made them want to rush out and tell a friend. Stories are submitted, selected and then interpreted for a live audience. At Grown-up Storytime, “interpreting” might be anything from a poker-faced, straight delivery to acting out each role, complete with costumes, music and slightly hokey special effects.
