President Donald Trump arrived at Ellington Field on Thursday afternoon, just in time to headline a GOP fundraiser designed to help Republican candidates in the state.
At least part of the money will be used to help shore up the candidacy of Ken Paxton who is in a close race with Democrat James Talarico for the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Republican John Cornyn. Some polls have shown Talarico to hold a slight lead over Paxton.
Trump’s visit comes at a time that he has drawn even more attention to himself — and further alienated residents of Canada — by signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America. His order does not extend to other countries and Canadian officials say they intend to stay with the original name of the Great Lakes lake. For the moment, Trump’s name change drew more attention than the protracted war the United States is in with Iraq.
