It’s a somewhat slow week in streaming. With several major shows set to debut in the coming weeks and the summer season about to kick into high gear, you may find yourself scrolling through endless menus looking for something new to watch.
This week, instead of highlighting the latest releases, we’re shining a light on three streaming sleepers. Some are recent arrivals, while others have been hiding in plain sight for years. Either way, they’re worth adding to your watchlist.
The Boroughs (Netflix)
We’ll start with one of the newest entries on the list. The Boroughs is executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, and created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.
Set in a retirement community in New Mexico, the sci-fi mystery follows a group of retirees who discover an otherworldly threat lurking beneath the surface of their quiet community. The series blends mystery, adventure, comedy and horror, but its greatest strength is its heart.
While the supernatural elements drive the plot, the story is ultimately about aging, grief, friendship and finding purpose in unexpected places. If you’re still searching for something that captures some of the spirit that made Stranger Things such a phenomenon, The Boroughs deserves a spot near the top of your queue.
Psych (Peacock)
Let’s hop in the way-back machine, or is it yesteryear? I’ve heard it both ways…
Premiering on USA Network in 2006, Psych became one of the network’s signature series during its eight-season run. Created by Steve Franks, the show follows Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez), a hyper-observant slacker who convinces the Santa Barbara Police Department that he’s a psychic detective.
Alongside his best friend Gus (Dulé Hill), Shawn solves murders and mysteries while maintaining the increasingly ridiculous charade.
Packed with ‘80s references, running gags and genuinely clever mysteries, Psych remains one of television’s most rewatchable comfort shows. The series even paid tribute to everything from Twin Peaks to the 1985 cult classic Clue, with several original cast members appearing in an episode.
The show’s popularity eventually led to three Peacock movies: Psych: The Movie, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home and Psych 3: This Is Gus. With rumors of additional films still circulating, it’s never too late to become a “Psych-O” and see what all the fuss is about.
Goliath (Prime Video)
Before Billy Bob Thornton became television’s favorite oilfield fixer in Landman, he was playing another compelling underdog in Goliath.
Created by David E. Kelley, the legal drama stars Thornton as Billy McBride, a once-prominent attorney whose life and career have fallen apart. When he takes on a seemingly impossible case against a powerful corporation, he finds an opportunity for redemption.
Over four seasons, McBride finds himself battling increasingly dangerous adversaries, from corporate giants to political power brokers and, eventually, forces tied to the opioid epidemic.
What makes Goliath work is Thornton himself. Few actors are better at portraying flawed, charismatic men hanging on by a thread. Fans who enjoy the dry wit and Southern charm he brings to Landman will find plenty of those same qualities on display here.
All four seasons are streaming now on Prime Video.
