Its not all just powdered opera wigs and oboes at the University of Houstons Moores School of Music, as youll see today when AURA the schools contemporary chamber music ensemble kicks off its 2009 concert season with 2 x 2, an Irish-tinged modern folk music program. The evenings main attraction is the -MacAdam-Somer Quartet performing the world premiere of A Suite in the Old Style for Two Violins and Two Cellos, which was written by author and UH Professor Robert Nelson specifically for the quartet. Putting together a world premiere is a neat trick for the quartet, which consists of two violins and two cellos, since all four members live in different cities.
The program continues with avant-garde composer Bruno Madernas Piece Pour Ivry, performed by violinist Batya MacAdam-Somer. Also in its world premiere is Irish Loops, performed by AURA. Other musical segments include A Bit OGreen, Mr. Fox and American Suite.
Despite the evenings Irish motif and relaxed atmosphere, they wont be serving green beer in the lobby, so concertgoers should try to show at least a little sense of decorum. 7:30 p.m. University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun. For information, call 713-743-3313 or visit www.music.uh.edu. $5 to $10.
