20/21 New Music Ensemble

Don’t expect music by dead guys at today’s performance of classical music by the 20/21 New Music Ensemble. Sure, the term “classical” implies “archaic” and “outmoded” to many, but it actually encompasses a wide variety of compositions spanning from hundreds of years ago to the present day. The 20/21 New Music Ensemble, formed at Rice in 2004, is dedicated to works from the more recent end of that spectrum. Today’s performance includes three contemporary–classical pieces: Derek Bermel’s “Tied Shifts,” cur-rent Rice student Ana Paola Santillán Alcocer’s “Crossroads” and Luciano Berio’s series of short works, including “Psy,” “Lied” and “Duet.” Come hear the works today, but remember — no powdered wigs allowed. 8 p.m. Hirsch Orchestra Rehearsal Hall, Rice University, 6100 Main.
