Donยt expect music by dead guys at todayยs performance of classical music by the 20/21 New Music Ensemble. Sure, the term ยclassicalย implies ยarchaicย and ยoutmodedย to many, but it actually encompasses a wide variety of compositions spanning from hundreds of years ago to the present day. The 20/21 New Music Ensemble, formed at Rice in 2004, is dedicated to works from the more recent end of that spectrum. Todayยs performance includes three contemporary–classical pieces: Derek Bermelยs ยTied Shifts,ย cur-rent Rice student Ana Paola Santillรกn Alcocerยs ยCrossroadsย and Luciano Berioยs series of short works, including ยPsy,ย ยLiedย and ยDuet.ย Come hear the works today, but remember ย no powdered wigs allowed. 8 p.m. Hirsch Orchestra Rehearsal Hall, Rice University, 6100 Main.
