Donย’t expect music by dead guys at todayย’s performance of classical music by the 20/21 New Music Ensemble. Sure, the term ย“classicalย” implies ย“archaicย” and ย“outmodedย” to many, but it actually encompasses a wide variety of compositions spanning from hundreds of years ago to the present day. The 20/21 New Music Ensemble, formed at Rice in 2004, is dedicated to works from the more recent end of that spectrum. Todayย’s performance includes three contemporary–classical pieces: Derek Bermelย’s ย“Tied Shifts,ย” cur-rent Rice student Ana Paola Santillรกn Alcocerย’s ย“Crossroadsย” and Luciano Berioย’s series of short works, including ย“Psy,ย” ย“Liedย” and ย“Duet.ย” Come hear the works today, but remember ย— no powdered wigs allowed. 8 p.m. Hirsch Orchestra Rehearsal Hall, Rice University, 6100 Main.
