In the opera world, its rare for a vocalist to establish much of an international presence before middle age this is especially true for sopranos. This is partly because the best voices take training and maturation, and partly because of operas institutionalized celebration of older, established diva-types in its main roles. It is to her great credit, then, that 28-year-old soprano Albina Shagimuratova, who will perform in the recital Bel Canto, has not only won over a number of judges at prestigious worldwide competitions, but got a legendary diva, Frederica von Stade, to admit that she was stunned by a recent performance. Shagimuratova, currently with the Houston Grand Opera Studio, appeared in this springs La Bohème and The Magic Flute; today she will sing works by Mozart, Rachmaninov and others at 7:30 p.m. May 10. Houston Baptist University, MCAC-Beilin Chapel, 7502 Fondren. For information, call 713-395-3301 or visit www.ourtx.org. $25 to $45.
