Tammy is everyone’s favorite Vietnamese manicurist, always finding ways to pile on extra fees for her services. The character is one of actor/comedian Anjelah Johnson‘s most popular characters – a video of her Nail Salon routine went viral, propelling Johnson to become a regular on MadTV. Another character, Bon Qui Qui, a black woman with a bad attitude who’s more ghetto than fabulous, earned her even more notice including an ALMA Award nomination. That’s How We Do It, a DVD recording of a live performance, was a big hit last year; the California-based Johnson recorded her DVD in Houston because of her strong fan base here.
In Johnson’s stand-up routine, she tells stories that sometimes include her characters. She covers dating: “I like to wear a T-shirt that says, ‘I have a big butt’ on the front, with ‘Just kidding’ on the back. Pisses black guys off.” She discusses her former life as a chola Raiders cheerleader: “It’s blood in, blood out, homey.” And she touches on work situations: Bon Qui Qui, who flips hamburgers, is quick to call for “sacurrity” whenever a customer has a complicated order. Be there to welcome Johnson to her favorite city today at 7 and 10 p.m. House of Blues, 1204 Caroline. For information, call 888-402-5837 or visit www.houseofblues.com. $20 to $30.
