The Rice football team being on the verge of going to its second bowl game in three seasons is about as likely as the U.S. electing a black president — oh wait, that happened already, didn’t it? The Owls look good, believe it or not, and will aim to sic their impressive offense on the rival Houston Cougars today at the annual Battle for the Bayou Bucket. UH has suffered from bouts of first-half lethargy this season, but the Coogs have still shown the ability to dominate defenses and will need to finish strong to secure a bowl bid. So what if it’s not Ohio State vs. Michigan — it’s our rivalry. Whether you align yourself with the hopeless nerds who execute social interaction with the grace and stickiness of newborn foals or the slackers who must be constantly reminded that they don’t attend a “real” college, prepare for a heated crosstown clash. 2 p.m. Rice Stadium, 2176 University. For tickets, call 713-522-6957 or visit www.riceowls.com. Free for Rice students; $25 to $55 for the general public.
