Fiery and wicked, Georges Bizetย’s Carmen was condemned as immoral when it first opened in Paris in 1875. Today, the opera about a gorgeous Spanish hedonist (read: gypsy) and the men who love her is one of the genreย’s most performed ย— what a difference a century or two makes. Opera in the Heights is taking advantage of our new millenniumย’s adoration of naughty girls by opening their ย“Women in Loveย” season with the popular opera. Carmen is a woman of mighty and multiple talents, singing beautiful arias, dancing seductively and living life in the fabulous moment ย— who cares what it all leads to in Act III, right?
