Funk-alicious! If there’s any musician from those hazy pharmaceutical days of the ‘60s who needs a documentary movie, it’s Sylvester Stewart, a.k.a. “Sly” of Sly and the Family Stone. This reclusive Texas native’s had enough comebacks, rehab stints and Top Ten hits for a double feature. Remember “Dance to the Music,” “Stand!” and “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” not to mention “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” “I Want to Take You Higher” and “Everyday People”? The band’s sexy techno bop sound, with its message of inclusiveness through chemical enhancement, forever changed the sound of urban pop music.

Dutch filmmaker Willem Alkema’s gritty — dare we call it funky — documentary Coming Back for More, screening here today, is the first in-depth look at this fascinating and legendary artist who hasn’t been seen much in the last 25 years.
