The new CounterCurrent performing and visual arts festival, organized by the University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, is putting a twist on things: A total of 11 performances and installations will be spread out across the city in the festival. Suzanne Bocanegra’s Rerememberer is a violin concert; the orchestra is made up of 50 individuals who have never played the violin before. The Mexico City-based Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol’s El Rumor del Incendio is a multimedia stage work examining the reasons ordinary citizens have taken up arms in political actions. Abinadi Meza and Miwa Matreyek are among the other artists in the festival.

Various times and locations. Daily. Through April 13. For a full schedule, visit countercurrentfestival.org. Free.
