Humanity is involved in a millennia-long romance with dance. The exhibition ยDance with Camera,ย currently at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, explores this relationship through film, video and photography, seeking to define the allure of movement. Ironically, the media used give us a much closer view of the action while keeping us far away from the performers. Images and film culled from more than 70 yearsย worth of work are included among the displays; the photography, which explores the paradoxes inherent in capturing movement with still photography, captures everything from amateurs in a gym class to prima ballerinas onstage. The exhibition is complemented by a screening series featuring classic works of dance on film, including All That Jazz, Singinย in the Rain and the avant-garde works of Maya Deren. Let the love story continue, starting with an opening reception from 7 to 10 p.m. August 6. The exhibition runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through October 17. 5216 Montrose.
