Poet David Ray Vance is a fan of Grayย’s Anatomy. (Weย’re talking Henry Gray.) In his poems, such as ย“Further Notes on Legerdemain,ย” Vance plays with optometry and wordsmith-ery in clever and insightful ways. ย“The pupil as muscle must be exercised,ย” he writes. And: ย“As I write, floaters swim in and out of the -periphery.ย”

Vance earned his doctorate from the University of Houstonย’s Creative Writing Program and currently has a teaching gig at the University of Texas ย— San Antonio. But we canย’t help but wonder why a love for medical science and ability to make it through seven years of school didnย’t compel him to become a doctor; itย’s much better pay. Just sayinย’ย…Vance reads with UH creative writing student Anna Journey at 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-523-0701 or visit www.brazosbookstore.com. Free.
