Writer Deirdre Shawย’s Love or Something Like It: A Novel has been called ย“piercingly insightful,ย” ย“gracefulย” and ย“razor-sharp.ย” Thatย’s heady praise for a first novel, especially for a first novel thatย’s mostly concerned with the too-familiar story of a thirtysomething woman finding her way through an emotional minefield filled with divorce, horrible bosses and illicit affairs. Itย’s ground thatย’s been extremely well covered. Shaw puts her own spin on the story, of course. The woman at the center of Love or Something Like It marries a stand-up comic, has a brother who is ย“like a house burning downย” and has an affair with her egomaniacal boss. (Oh yeah, that always turns out well.) Like her protagonist, Shaw has written for television. Weย’re hoping thatย’s where the similarities end.
