Move over, Tori, thereย’s a real piano goddess in town. Eleanor Sandresky, darling of the Modern Music set, performs her piano ballet A Sleeperย’s Dream at DiverseWorks. The composer, performance artist and pianist comes with quite a reputation, having collaborated with experimental giants such as Philip Glass.

The concept may be a little daunting, with descriptions like ย“choreographed piano balletย” flying around, but Sandreskyย’s main goal is expression via sound and movement, and the combination is much more compelling than any recital has any right to be. Her piano sounds both bold and fragile through the hour-long work, and her body movements accent the drama of the piece, which is an exploration of sleep. Her hands flutter, accentuating trills in the pieces that are named after stages of sleep, such as ย“REMย” and ย“Dream 1.ย” Relaxing, yes, but hardly snooze-inducing.
